This summer I had the opportunity to be in DaLiang, Shunde, at the historical Qinghui Gardens. It so happened that there was an art exhibition held by Hong Kong traditional Chinese landscape painter Yau Yu Ngai. There were folding fans, scrolls and paintings of various sizes which just blew my mind. Who is this artist Yau Yu Ngai and why have I not heard of him before? I am an avid collector of fine Chinese arts and have been doing it for over 50 years. A real collector never stops buying and my dear wife can attest to that. Close to half of my art collection are paintings and the rest are ceramics, wooden stands, bronzes and some jade pieces. My painting collection are done by artists that are no longer around and are mostly landscape. I enjoy a good traditional landscape painting very much, but today it is very difficult to find an artist that can paint the traditional way with hints of flavor from the Song dynasties to the mid Qing era. I stayed at the hotel close to the Qinghui Gardens for 3 days and visited the exhibition for 2 hours every day. I was told by the staff there that the paintings were not for sale but could contact the artist via e-mail which I did. I was in Nirvana till we left for Beijing. Unfortunately for me, the paintings that I would have like to own were borrowed from collectors or had been pre-sold to close contacts. I am patiently waiting for Yau Yu Ngai's next exhibition that I am told to be in Shenzhen in April 2013.

Yau Yu Ngai's painting exhibition at the Qinghui gardens got to be the most interesting traditional chinese landscape painting in a long while. I cannot recall seeing anything like this one that had all the disciplines of traditional landscape painting covered by one artist in an exhibition. From extremely well controlled ink splashing on silver paper to grandiose landscapes on 18 inches wide fans and breath taking sceneries on 10 inches wide scrolls running up to 18 feet long! Absolutely spectacular. Keep up the amazing work.

We were invited to Shunde to attend the opening of Yau Yu Ngai's exhibition and must say what an event it was. There were lots of guests and friends of the artist present, at least 300 or more. From what we saw, the mood was very happy and exciting. The paintings (close to 100) were just splendid. Never seen so many beautiful landscape paintings at one place at any one time. Hope to be able to be at his next exhibit.
